Uncovering the Root of the “Better Than” Mentality: My Personal Journey

The “better than” mentality is a common issue in our society. It is the belief that we are superior to others, leading us to constantly compare ourselves to others and prioritize our own achievements over theirs. This mentality can be damaging to our relationships and prevent us from reaching our full potential. In this article, I will share my personal journey in uncovering the root of my “better than” mentality and how I learned to cultivate a more compassionate and empathetic approach towards others.

My Experience with the “Better Than” Mentality

Growing up, I always felt the need to prove myself as better than others. Whether it was in school or sports, I always strived to be the best and looked down on those who I perceived as weaker or less successful. This mentality followed me into adulthood, where I often compared myself to others in terms of career success and material possessions.

However, as I began to reflect on my behavior and interactions with others, I realized how damaging this mindset was. Not only was it preventing me from forming genuine connections with others, but it was also causing me great stress and anxiety as I constantly felt the need to prove myself as superior.

Uncovering the Root Cause of the “Better Than” Mentality

Through therapy and self-reflection, I began to uncover the root cause of my “better than” mentality. It was rooted in a deep-seated fear of not being good enough and a need for external validation. As a child, I was often praised for my accomplishments and received love and approval from my parents when I succeeded. This created a subconscious belief that my worth was based on my achievements and that I needed to prove myself constantly to receive love and acceptance.

Additionally, growing up in a competitive environment and comparing myself to others fueled my “better than” mentality. I was taught to believe that success was based on being “better than” others and that there was a limited amount of resources available. As a result, I felt the need to constantly prove myself as superior in order to succeed.

Cultivating Compassion and Empathy towards Others

Through my journey in uncovering the root cause of my “better than” mentality, I also learned how to cultivate compassion and empathy towards others. I realized that by judging others and comparing myself to them, I was preventing myself from truly understanding their experiences and perspectives.

I began to practice empathy by listening actively to others and seeking to understand their experiences and feelings. I also learned to celebrate the successes of others and recognize that their achievements did not diminish my own. By shifting my focus from competition to collaboration and mutual support, I was able to form deeper connections with others and create a more fulfilling and meaningful life.


The “better than” mentality can be damaging to our relationships and prevent us from reaching our full potential. Through my personal journey, I learned how to uncover the root cause of my “better than” mentality and cultivate compassion and empathy towards others. By recognizing that our worth is not based on external validation and shifting our focus from competition to collaboration, we can create a more fulfilling and meaningful life. Remember, cultivating compassion and empathy takes practice and effort, but it is essential for fostering healthy relationships and personal growth.
